Dixon Chan, Co-Founder of US$6M Funded Burpple says its re-focused back to the Web because that’s where it gets most of its new customers.
Hosting a closed door session, Dixon Chan, co-founder of food review app Burpple, said what many of us in the industry were thinking. Even though Burpple started as an app and is better known as an app, the best strategy for getting new customers is still a web strategy.
Dixon added, “The thing is, most people still find us on search. We only do SEO and organic now.”
Dixon was talking about the launch of Burpple 2.0 which will be more web centered. What Burpple is doing is spending on web as one of its core strategies, bringing previously app-only content back onto the web so that is now searchable to those who have yet to download the app.
The Web Is About Search
Ok, many of us do not have US $6M to start with an app and go back to a website. But if a startup like Burpple is doing it and they have tons of marketing resources, why not shortcut the process and go back to a web strategy.
Sticky But Get Stuck
Why investors like Apps is that it adds an additional level of stickyness once a user downloads an app. It’s there always on their phone. But this also adds an additional level of adoption, with the users deciding to if they should give up that wonderful space on their device.
Cost wise it more than triples development cost due to having IOS, Android and the server at the back. Compatibility could be a nightmare.
The bottom line is still, if the solution works in the first place. App or web, nobody is going to use it if it does not work. Think twice about whether your solution warrants your use going that extra step to download it.
